The Vice Chairman of Adur District Council
The Vice-Chairman of Adur District Council is Cllr George Barton.
George entered the world of Commerce at the ripe old age of 16 having set off to London just like Dick Whittington, but without the cat.
He initially trained as an auditor but felt that there was not enough excitement in this and changed direction into the field of Sales Training and Marketing. Having moved to the North East as Regional Manager for one of the Industrial Training Boards he was soon headhunted by a national Commercial Stationery Company where he spent 15 happy years as their Sales and Marketing Director.
Having spotted an opportunity within the Stationery Industry, George moved on to set up his own highly successful Marketing and Sales Training Consultancy advising many of the leading companies in that industry - and even bought a hotel in York on the way ! He also became a very popular "motivational speaker" at company conferences around Europe.
Having retired from the Territorial Army, where he rose from the rank of Private to Lt Colonel and awarded the Territorial Decoration, George felt the need for another challenge and entered the world of local politics. He joined the City of York Unitary Authority having unseated the then Lib Dem Councillor and at the end of his first year as a Councillor was elected Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group.
George moved to Sompting four years ago to be nearer his two children following an accident to his wife Vee and was elected two years ago to Adur District Council as councillor for Peveral Ward, Sompting. In 2017 he was also elected to West Sussex County Council.
If the Chairman is unable to attend an event the Vice Chairman can attend on their behalf and take on the role and responsibilities of the Chairman.
