Council leader wants renewed focus on Worthing town centre maintenance
Released: Friday, 05 June 2026
The leader of Worthing Borough Council has outlined her ambition to invest further funds into the town centre to make it more welcoming, attractive and enjoyable for all.
Councillor Caroline Baxter wants to see additional investment directed towards enhanced maintenance across the town centre, including increased jet washing and cleansing, improved upkeep of public infrastructure and a continued focus on maintaining high standards in public spaces.
The investment would build on improvements already being delivered across the town. This includes the major regeneration project Montague Gardens, which is creating a vibrant green space for everyone to enjoy in the heart of the town centre. The project is due to be completed this summer.
Cllr Baxter said:
"Since becoming leader, I've been speaking to residents, businesses and town centre partners about what they want to see. A consistent message has been the importance of maintaining a clean, welcoming and attractive environment.
“Supporting local businesses and strengthening civic pride are key priorities for me. Taking pride in our town means looking after the places we share, from our streets and public spaces to our parks and seafront.
“I want to ensure we invest more in these important spaces, building on the significant improvements already underway and supporting Worthing's continued success as a vibrant and attractive destination.”
A number of new businesses have recently been attracted to the town centre, including Skechers, while retailer TK Maxx has confirmed it will remain in Worthing and relocate from the Montague Centre to Montague Street.
We are also installing new wayfinding monoliths across the town centre, helping residents and visitors navigate between key destinations while encouraging them to discover more of what Worthing has to offer. The colourful signs celebrate the town's unique character and make it easier to explore.
Further improvements will be visible in the coming weeks as our parks team continues its summer planting programme. Planting has already begun, bringing additional colour to the town centre while supporting pollinators and local biodiversity.
We will continue to work closely with the Worthing Town Centre Business Improvement District, independent traders and the community to deliver improvements, gather feedback and ensure future investment reflects the needs of businesses, residents and visitors.
The additional investment would form part of the council's ongoing commitment to supporting a vibrant and prosperous town centre for residents, businesses and visitors.
