The exhibition, demonstration or performance of hypnotism
Any exhibition, demonstration or performance of hypnotism (as defined in the Hypnotism Act 1952) on any person requires the express written consent of the Licensing Authority, Adur District Council or Worthing Borough Council, and must comply with any attached conditions it determines. These Authorities will consider all applications on their merit and may give consent under the terms of the Hypnotism Act 1952.
All applications for consent shall be in writing and signed by the applicant or his/her agent, and shall normally be made not less than 28 days in advance of the performance concerned. This period may be reduced in the case of a hypnotist who has performed at the same venue within the last three years without any problems occurring.
The Councils' Licensing Unit will normally respond within 7 to 14 days, less where the hypnotist has previously performed at the same venue.
Once a completed application form is received and the information has been checked, the following agencies may, at the authority’s discretion, be consulted: Police, Fire Authority, Health and Safety, Local Safeguarding Children’s Board and relevant ward members.
If there are no objections to the application, it can be approved by an authorised officer of the Licensing Unit. Any licence issued is subject to conditions.
If relevant objections are received the application may be referred to the relevant Councils' Licensing Committee for consideration at a hearing.
