Council Tax scams

Please be aware that some customers have been contacted by fraudulent agents via text, email or over the phone. Typically they have been told that either:

  • their Council Tax band is wrong
  • they owe money
  • they are due a refund

In many instances they are asked to pay a fee to correct the mistake.

This is a scam. Please do not click on any links or give out any personal information, particularly your bank details. Try to end any phone calls as quickly as possible.

If your Council Tax account is in arrears, or if you have overpaid and can claim a refund, we will always write to you first. We would never charge a fee.

If you think your property is in the wrong Council Tax band you can ask the Valuation Office Agency to reassess your Council Tax band. This is a free service.

If you think you have been contacted by a fraudulent agent please contact us as soon as possible:

  • Worthing residents: 01903 221061

You should also report any suspected scam to the police and Action Fraud.
