Accessible public toilets

All accessible public toilets in Adur and Worthing are locked to prevent vandalism and require a RADAR key (also known as an NKS) to access.

RADAR keys offer disabled people independent access to locked public toilets with disabled facilities across the UK. They also work at some other locations such as Lancing and Sompting Cemetery where it can be used to open the gates and allow a vehicle to enter.

How to get a RADAR key

You can buy RADAR keys from the:

Changing Places public toilets

Changing Places toilets provide more space and additional features to enable disabled people and their carers to use them safely and comfortably. They are designed for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and their carers, as well as many disabled people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

Changing Places toilets and all accessible toilets, can be accessed during the opening times using a RADAR key.

We currently offer Changing Places toilet facilities at the following locations:

Community Toilet Scheme

Community Toilet Scheme logo (150px)

We have launched a Community Toilet Scheme with partners and local businesses to make more well-maintained facilities available to the public free of charge.

The scheme has launched with a number of buildings already signed up, including The Shoreham Centre, Shoreham Library, Lancing Parish Hall and Eastbrook Manor Community Centre, Worthing Town Hall, Worthing Library and Brooklands Café.

It's hoped that the scheme will make it easier for members of the public to identify additional toilet facilities they can use without needing to make a purchase, while also knowing they are being maintained to a good standard.

Businesses, organisations and buildings across the area are being invited to make their facilities readily available for the public when they need them. In return, and based on the level of facilities available, we will contribute around £20 per week to participating premises to help fund the cleaning of the sites.

There will continue to be dozens of council-owned public facilities across Adur and Worthing, and it's hoped that the scheme's introduction will provide additional facilities for members of the public, particularly in the area's town and village centres.

Participating premises will display a membership sticker in their windows, indicating they are signed up to the scheme. Premises must also supply adequate hand washing and drying provision, as well as bins.

See:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the Community Toilet Scheme:

Q: How can businesses, organisations or buildings join the scheme?

Businesses interested in joining the scheme can contact the councils' neighbourhood team for more information:

Q: What are the benefits for my business?

Participating businesses receive an annual payment from the councils, which equates to around £20 per week. Additionally, it can increase footfall, improve community goodwill, and enhance your business' reputation as a community-friendly establishment.

Many local businesses support the community already with this provision. The scheme offers financial incentive for participating premises which aren't council-owned or operated.

Q: Are there any specific requirements for businesses?

Yes, participating businesses must ensure their toilets are clean, safe and accessible to the public during their operating hours. We will conduct periodic checks to ensure compliance.

Q: What if a customer abuses the facilities?

Businesses are encouraged to manage their facilities as they would for their regular customers. The scheme primarily relies on the goodwill of both businesses and users. Serious incidents should be reported to the councils.

Q: How do I locate participating premises?

Participating premises are listed on this webpage. They will also display the Community Toilet Scheme logo to show that they are signed up:

Community Toilet Scheme banner (white)

Q: Is there a cost to use the toilets?

No, there is no charge for using toilets signed up to the Community Toilet Scheme.

Q: What if a toilet is dirty or inaccessible?

If you encounter issues with the cleanliness or accessibility of a participating toilet, please report it to the participating business. If you feel a participating business is not maintaining standards in terms of cleanliness or accessibility, please report this to us:

Q: Can I use the facilities outside business hours?

No, the facilities are only available during the business' stated operating hours.

Q: Who manages the Community Toilet Scheme?

We are responsible for managing the scheme, including business recruitment, payments and addressing feedback from users and businesses.

Q: What are the costs for running the scheme?

We will pay an annual fee to participating premises, which equates to around £20 per week. Premises must be open at least five or six days a week to comply - those open seven days a week will receive a larger financial contribution from the councils. The scheme is funded through our budgets.
