Shoreham sale clears way for dozens of new social homes

We have completed the sale of our former Ashcroft House sheltered accommodation site so that modern social homes can be built for older residents.
Worthing Homes has purchased from us a 250-year lease of the land in Kingston Lane, Shoreham, for £500,000. A complex of 57 homes spread over two and three-storey buildings will be created on the site of what was Ashcroft House and eight empty council bungalows.
All of the new homes will go to Adur residents on our housing register, with us continuing to select any new tenants for the whole length of the lease. Worthing Homes will manage and maintain the buildings, and the new residents will be tenants of the housing association.
The homes will be a mix of one and two-bedroom properties, for people aged 60 or over. There will be communal lounges, sunrooms and outdoor gardens for the residents to enjoy.
The buildings will also be energy efficient, with solar panels on the roof to generate renewable energy for the properties.
Councillor Lee Cowen, Adur's cabinet member for housing, said:
“This partnership between ourselves and Worthing Homes will lead to dozens of purpose-built sheltered accommodation properties being built for older Adur residents.

We decided the site should be redeveloped after inspections revealed that Ashcroft House needed urgent and extensive fire safety improvements. It was determined it would be more effective to replace the building with modern purpose-built age-restricted accommodation, so the residents of the 21 flats at Ashcroft House were rehoused and the building was demolished.
While Worthing Homes redevelops the site, we will continue to focus our investment on improving the condition of our other homes. This includes spending up to £2 million refurbishing and improving a large number of our council homes that have fallen empty and which require significant investment before they can be lived in again.
