Work begins on permanent repair for Worthing Pier

Work has begun on the permanent repair to protect Worthing Pier for future generations.

The pier had to be closed suddenly in October 2024 after it suffered storm damage to its supporting piles that left it unsafe for the public.

We were able to reopen it later that year after we worked with specialist engineering companies to design and build a temporary steel support structure that currently sits underneath the weakened section of the pier and gives it extra strength.

Council and specialist engineers have now begun work on a repair that will allow the pier to stand firm against the elements for decades to come without the need for the steel support structure.

The first step has been to remove two support piles as well as the concrete foundations of those piles and the two broken piles that have had to be removed previously. Our contractor had to use powerful jackhammers to break up the concrete, so we're sorry to nearby residents who were disturbed by the noise. These photos show the support structure doing its job after the piles had been removed.

We're doing the work in the summer and early autumn when the weather conditions and tides are generally easier to work in, in the hope that the project will be able to be completed more quickly and more cost effectively, with the pier able to remain open at the same time.

The next step will be using September's spring tides - when the tide goes out far enough for the team to have a good amount of time on the beach - to install the foundations for the replacement piles that will eventually support that section of the pier.

In addition to this major work, regular routine maintenance will continue along the length of the underside of the pier. Minor repairs are a regular occurrence for a structure of the pier's age, and include tightening bolts and replacing tie bars and bull bars underneath the pier's decking.
