Bus passengers set to get new and improved shelters in Worthing
Released: Wednesday, 10 June 2026
Ageing bus shelters across Worthing are set to be replaced and additional ones installed as part of a plan for new investment in sustainable travel in the borough.
We have drawn up a list of shelters with West Sussex County Council that we would like to replace. We would use up to £240,000 from the county council's Bus Service Improvement Plan, funded by the Department for Transport, and contributions from developers.
The plan would allow eight seafront bus shelters between Bath Place and The Steyne to be replaced, along with one in Romany Road, one in Columbia Drive and one in Grand Avenue.
The project team are also recommending the installation of additional shelters in Shaftesbury Avenue, Goring Road, on the A259 near the junction with The Strand, and outside the lido in Marine Parade.
Most of Worthing's bus shelters are more than 30 years old. A report considered by our joint strategic committee yesterday highlighted that those earmarked for replacement are among those in the worst condition.
Councillor Caroline Baxter, the leader of Worthing Borough Council, said:
“For many in our community, buses are not only a valued way of getting around but are a lifeline that gives them easier access to services around the town.
“Many of our existing shelters are more than 30 years old. Replacing them and providing new shelters where they are needed will create safer, more comfortable places for people to wait for their bus.
"Projects like this help make our neighbourhoods more welcoming, encourage sustainable travel and contribute to the pride we all want to feel in our town."
A West Sussex County Council spokesperson said:
“Through our Bus Service Improvement Plan, we work with local councils and bus operators to identify where investment will make the biggest difference for passengers and residents.
“Together, we've identified the Worthing seafront bus shelters as a key location for improvement, and we are delighted to support Worthing Borough Council with these upgrades.
“These improvements will enhance the area and provide a safer, more comfortable place for people to wait. This project demonstrates the value of partnership working and supports our priority to encourage more people to travel by bus, helping to build a more sustainable and prosperous economy.”
The improvements will make waiting for buses safer, more comfortable and more attractive for passengers, while supporting efforts to improve public transport and encourage more people to use them.
The county council is working in partnership with bus operators to improve reliability, punctuality and capacity on bus services in Worthing, with additional shelters proposed to be sited on routes that have been amended to help passengers.
The proposals also include green living roofs, improved lighting and better seating, to help to create attractive and welcoming public spaces while supporting biodiversity and improving the passenger experience.
The shelters would match the colour of existing ones across the borough, with black being installed in conservation areas and blue in other parts of Worthing. Sticking to two colours makes it easier and more affordable for shelters to be repainted, as we're able to store or quickly order supplies when needed.
It is hoped that new shelters will be installed this autumn and winter.
