Residents moving into new Worthing council accommodation

Worthing residents in need of somewhere to live are moving into our newly-finished town centre council accommodation.

A group of five one-bedroom and studio flats have been created for us in what was empty office space in Marine Place.

Contractor Woodhart reshaped the internal layout of the building to create the new council accommodation, while retaining the historic Regency exterior as a feature of the conservation area.

The first tenants have now moved into the new homes, which have been designed to be more environmentally friendly than traditional properties and less expensive for residents to run. Key features include solar panels on the roof and air source water heating equipment in each flat, which will produce clean, cheaper energy and hot water for the residents.

Well over 200 local households are currently having to be housed away from Worthing because of a severe shortage of social housing here.

New homes like these allow us to bring Worthing people back to Worthing so they can be closer to their jobs, their children's schools and their families and friends.

Councillor Ödül Bozkurt, Worthing's cabinet member for housing and citizen services, said:

“We have a critical shortage of social housing in the town and we are working hard to create more where we can for local families. This is an absolute priority for us.

“These new flats will allow us to help Worthing families who currently have no fixed home of their own. They are high-quality, state-of-the-art residences that will provide both physical and mental safety for adults and children.”

The conversion of the building was part funded using £400,000 from Homes England, the government's national housing and regeneration agency, along with more than £50,000 from the government's Brownfield Land Release Fund.
