Conservatives gain seat in Worthing Borough Council by-election

The Conservatives have gained a seat in Marine Ward after yesterday's Worthing Borough Council by-election.

Conservative candidate Thomas Taylor was elected with 865 votes. The full list of results are as follows:

  • Lionel Harman (Reform) - 228
  • Mary Mernagh (Labour) - 781
  • Jimi Taylor (Green) - 138
  • Thomas Taylor (Conservative) - 865 (elected)*
  • Nicholas Wiltshire (Lib Dem) - 113

* the number of votes for Thomas Taylor (Conservative) has been amended to 885

Rejected / invalid - 1
Turnout - 32%

The seat was previously held by former Worthing Borough Council leader Dr Beccy Cooper (for Labour), but had been vacant since her election as the new MP for Worthing West.

The results mean that the council is currently made up of 21 Labour members, 10 Conservatives, two Greens and three Worthing Community Independents.

A by-election for the vacant Heene Ward seat is due to take place on Thursday 10th October 2024. Here are some key dates for your diary:

  • Tuesday 24th September to register to vote
  • Wednesday 25th September to vote by post
  • Wednesday 2nd October to register for a Voter Authority Certificate
