About Hackney carriage and private hire licensing
Adur District Council and Worthing Borough Council are served by a single officer structure but remain separate licensing authorities. The councils are responsible for the licensing of hackney carriage (taxis) drivers & vehicles, private hire drivers & vehicles and private hire operators who wish to operate within either the Adur District or Worthing Borough.
As licensing authorities, the councils' primary function is protection of the public whilst providing businesses with the relevant licences necessary to carry out a legitimate business.
- Before a hackney carriage or private hire driver licence can be issued: checks will be carried out to determine if the driver is a 'fit and proper person' to be issued with a licence.
- Before a vehicle is licensed: checks will be carried out to ensure the vehicle is safe and suitable to transport the public.
