Adur Air Quality Strategy consultation

The council has prepared an Air Quality Strategy following the rejection by Defra of our previous draft Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) in 2023.

Defra rejected our 2023 draft AQAP and instructed us to revoke the Shoreham High Street Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) as our measurements had shown levels consistently below the objective for Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2). We had already decided to revoke the Southwick AQMA for the same reasons. So, both AQMA's were revoked in December 2023.

The Government's Air Quality Strategy (2023) placed a new requirement on Local Authorities without AQMAs to produce a local Air Quality Strategy, outlining actions the Authority will take to improve air quality in the area. Hence this new Strategy.

It provides an overview of air quality across Adur and focuses on work by the council to support good air quality in the District through a range of interventions.

We have consulted with both West Sussex County Council Highways and Public Health and incorporated their comments into the draft.
