SustainableAW: Transport Supporting sustainable travel: cycling, walking, and public transport use
Please note: This web page is due to be updated to reflect the new actions put forward in SustainableAW 2021-23.
Adur & Worthing Councils are committed to stewarding, protecting and improving the environment. Working with the local community and collaborating with partners, we are taking action.
These are some of our key Transport activities and actions this year as part of our long term vision:
Action: Improve Council commuting and business travel
Adur & Worthing Councils will:
- Adopt and implement a Travel Action Plan and measures to help staff to choose to cycle, walk, car share and use public transport
Adur & Worthing Councils have developed a Travel Action Plan with support from transport charity Sustrans, to gain a better understanding of how staff and councillors currently travel to, from and for work. This is to better understand how to encourage more sustainable means of travel such as walking, cycling, car sharing and public transport more of the time.
When staff and members from large employers travel by more sustainable modes there can be positive benefits for health and wellbeing as well as local traffic congestion and air quality improvements.
One of the outcomes of the Travel Action Plan is to access sustainable transport discounts for staff. See the action below 'Offer sustainable travel discounts for employees'

Action: Improve cycling and walking infrastructure
Adur & Worthing Councils will:
- Develop and adopt a Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan to improve safe routes for walking and cycling, and seek funding to implement these
The aim of this work is to make walking and cycling the natural choices for shorter journeys or as part of a longer journey.
A Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan has been developed following widespread consultation throughout Adur and Worthing.
See the full plan:
The following maps have been extracted from the full plan above for ease of access:
The plan includes a list of cycling routes and walking zones that could be developed. This work is the result of close collaboration with West Sussex County Council. The County Council are the Highways Authority and therefore have responsibility for designing and delivering the cycle routes on the public highways. The Councils will continue collaborating with the County Council to support the delivery of safe cycling routes and infrastructure.
A local action group has been created to help this plan support the LCWIP process and other related walking and cycling projects in Adur and Worthing. This group is called the 'Adur & Worthing Walking & Cycling Action Group' and is made up of representatives from local cycle groups, and other interested parties.
West Sussex County Council has created a partnership of local authorities in the county that are developing these types of plans.
