New Mayor of Worthing announced

Released: Thursday, 25 May 2023

Councillor Jon Roser has been elected as the new Mayor of Worthing following a vote at the annual meeting of Worthing Borough Council.

Cllr Roser has lived in Worthing for 18 years and is one of three members representing Selden Ward. This is the first time he's served as Mayor of the Borough.

During his 12-month term, Cllr Roser will work closely with the communities of Worthing, represent the Council at civic events and help raise valuable funds for his chosen charities - Broadwater Support Group and Community Hub, Cycall inclusive cycling and Parkinson's UK Worthing & Washington Group.

Worthing's new Mayor thanked his fellow councillors for the opportunity and promised to give the role his all, despite the physical limits he's currently facing due to his personal health.

Cllr Roser said:

“When I first moved to Worthing 18 years ago I had no idea, nor plan, to become a councillor, let alone Mayor.

“I have chosen three brilliant charities from across the town and hope you'll support any events I organise over the next year to help raise donations for them and the incredible work they do for our local communities.

“I really look forward to meeting you all.”

Cllr Roser thanked his predecessor, Cllr Henna Chowdhury, for her term in office, a message which was supported by the whole Council.

During her time as First Citizen, Cllr Chowdhury brought the mayoralty to the whole community and grew an even stronger bond with the town she's loved living in for much of her life.

Throughout her year as Mayor, Cllr Chowdhury raised a grand total of £21,451.11 for her charities, which has been split equally between Superstar Arts, Worthing Mencap and West Sussex Mind Worthing. Representatives of each charity attended yesterday's meeting to receive their cheques.

At the meeting, Cllr Ibsha Choudhury was also announced as the new Deputy Mayor of Worthing. Cllr Choudhury, who represents Castle Ward in the town.

If you work or live in the area and wish to invite the Mayor of Worthing to one of your events, please email the Council's Civic Office:
