Worthing seafront photography exhibition shines light on climate crisis
Released: Wednesday, 19 October 2022
A new exhibition that highlights the climate crisis has been unveiled at the Seafront Gallery on Worthing promenade.
The exhibition, called Open Eco, forms part of Photo Fringe 2022 - the tenth edition of the photography festival which takes place at venues throughout Sussex.
This is the second time Photo Fringe has chosen the Seafront Gallery as a venue. To support its 2022 theme of “real utopias”, for this exhibition Photo Fringe invited artists to submit images that respond to the question ‘how can photography make a difference to the climate crisis?’.
The 20 chosen images were selected by a panel of judges for the way they engage audiences to imagine a greener, fairer world. The exhibition will run for six months and the images will also feature on the Photo Fringe 2022 festival website, where many of the artists have created additional online exhibitions.

Claire Wearn, Photo Fringe Festival Director, said:
"We’re delighted with the response to our open call and so happy to be able to present such strong images from artists based internationally, across the UK and locally too.
“We presented an exhibition in the same location for our 2020 festival and received such positive feedback from seafront visitors. I am confident that these thought-provoking works will be every bit as engaging."
Cllr Rita Garner, Worthing Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture & Leisure, said:
“The Seafront Gallery is a fantastic addition to Worthing’s seafront and we are thrilled that Photo Fringe has chosen it as a venue once again.
“The theme of this latest exhibition is so important because we are in the midst of a climate emergency. Art is a great way to get people talking and I’m sure these eye-catching images will certainly achieve that.”
The new gallery replaces ‘One of Us’, which was jointly created by artist Anna Brownsted and residents in Adur and Worthing to celebrate the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. This exhibition has become especially popular since the Queen’s death in September. You can find out more about it by visiting the artist’s website.
