One green-minded youngster puts down roots in her home town

One green-minded youngster has been able to put down roots in her home town with the help of Worthing Borough Council.
Nine-year-old Freya Bezencon was inspired to follow in the footsteps of Greta Thunberg after learning about the potential impacts of climate change to her local area.
After hearing the local authority had declared a climate emergency, the youngster took part in a climate strike outside Worthing Town Hall in 2019 - where she and a group of other children made plans with the then Mayor to help address climate change in the borough.
Since then she has set up a YouTube channel called Planet Peace. As part of the latest episode, Freya was invited to safely attend a special socially distanced tree planting organised by Council’s parks team at Highdown Hill.
In the video below, Freya and her sister Minnie share more on the session, including what they planted and why trees are important at this location.
“I would strongly recommend tree planting to other children as it was very enjoyable and the more people that get involved in planting trees then the greater the impact on the environment. Hopefully I can help plant some more soon!”
The tree planting is a small part of the work the Council is doing to adapt and improve the open spaces across the borough to help reach our SustainableAW commitment of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
We would like to say a huge thanks to Freya for her efforts and her inspiring passion for the environment. We hope more community plantings will be available to take place in the near future.
