Councils encourage locals to sign up for healthy lifestyle courses in 2021

Released: Friday, 08 January 2021

New weight management and alcohol wellbeing programmes are available for residents, and people who work in Adur & Worthing, following the festive period.

Adur & Worthing Councils are offering people the chance to get fit, healthy and active in 2021 with the launch of a number of new initiatives, funded by Public Health West Sussex.

The brand-new Alcohol Wellbeing Service goes live this month. People aged 18 and over, who want to reduce their drinking, can have up to six free one-to-one sessions with a trained Wellbeing Advisor.

The aim is to support people whose drinking has increased, but who are not dependent on alcohol, and sessions will be held over the phone and via email, in line with the current COVID guidelines and restrictions.

Three new weight management courses for men will begin in February to complement the popular general weight management courses which the Councils have been offering for a number of years.

The new 12-week courses have been designed to help men tackle their weight through healthy eating and activity, and will be run solely online until it is safe to resume physical sessions again, at which point there will be a mix.

Cllr Kevin Boram, Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing in Adur, said:

“All of the programmes run by our fantastic Wellbeing Team provide each person taking part with the support and guidance they need to achieve their goals, which can be difficult to do alone, especially after potentially overindulging during the festive period.

“The Councils' weight management courses give people the chance to achieve measurable weight loss results as well as the tools needed to move forward with a more active, healthier lifestyle.”

Cllr Val Turner, Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing in Worthing, added:

“Our brand-new Alcohol Wellbeing Service is about enabling people who are somewhat aware they need to make a change to their drinking behaviour, but aren't sure how, to do so.

“By offering a one-to-one service like this as part of our other fantastic wellbeing programmes, we are equipping people in Adur and Worthing with the tools they need to begin 2021 fitter and healthier.”
