Decking provides new access to Lifeboat Memorial

Released: Tuesday, 09 June 2020

Worthing Borough Councillor Kevin Jenkins and Susan Belton, Chair of the Worthing Society welcomed the newly elected Mayor Cllr Lionel Harman and Mayoress Karen Harman to the seafront to celebrate the installation of a new decked pathway which allows safe access to the Lifeboat Memorial Garden.

The memorial, which was rededicated in September, celebrates the lives of lifeboat men lost at sea and is an important part of Worthing's maritime history.

Cllr Kevin Jenkins, the Council's Executive Member for Regeneration said:

“I'm thrilled that Worthing Borough Council have been able to fund and install this new decking both here, at the Memorial Garden and at the Waterwise Playground in west Worthing. Using recycled plastic for this work is another step in the right direction in creating a more sustainable environment and form part of ongoing seafront improvements carried out by the Council.”

Susan Belton, Chair of the Worthing Society said:

“Many descendants of these brave men are now elderly and this impressive walkway will enable them to pay tribute to their forebears. It is also very important that all members of the community, including those who are disabled and the younger generation, are able to appreciate this important part of Worthing's unique history.”

Cllr Lionel Harman, himself a former Royal Naval Reserve said:

“After attending the re-dedication ceremony for the Lifeboat Memorial last year, it is great that it has now been made accessible to all with the installation of this walkway, even better that it has been constructed from recycled plastic. I hope the memorial will be visited and enjoyed by residents and visitors to Worthing alike for many years to come.”
