Seafront restaurant plans submitted

Released: Tuesday, 27 August 2019

Plans to replace a seafront shelter with a beach-side restaurant have taken a big step forward.

Nextcolour Ltd has struck a long-term agreement with Worthing Borough Council for the site opposite West Buildings, with the aim of creating a new two-storey food and drink destination.

Detailed proposals have now been submitted with members of the public invited to have their say ahead a decision being made by the Council's Planning Committee in the coming months.

If approval is granted, the building will become a new premises for Bistrot Pierre, who already have successful restaurants in south Wales, Birmingham, Nottingham and Bath.

Councillor Kevin Jenkins, Worthing Borough Council's Executive Member for Regeneration, said:

“As a council we are determined to drive through significant improvements to our seafront offer. We will not sit still and want to modernise our offer while not forgetting its traditional delights.”

The seafront shelter plan will see the existing public shelter demolished and replaced with a restaurant over two floors. This would include outdoor seating area at ground floor and a covered external first floor terrace.

Planning papers submitted by Nextcolour said:

“The proposed development would assist with the modernisation and appeal of the seafront in Worthing, by providing a high-quality facility in this location which would add to, and complement, the existing facilities in the area.”

The applicant added it felt the proposal would benefit the visual amenity of the Conservation Area and boost tourism and economic development.
