Ice rink to return to Steyne Gardens this winter

Released: Tuesday, 19 July 2022

The popular Steyne Gardens ice rink is to return to Worthing.

Worthing Borough Council has signed a new contract with Town Centre Ice Rinks Ltd for the attraction to return to the area this winter.

The ice rink will be in place for 15 weeks from November to February for the next three years, with the possibility of the contract being extended for a further three years.

The Council agreed to the arrangement after the operator - run by Richard and Suzi Bradley - offered to invest to make the attraction more environmentally friendly, in line with the Council's commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030. A new, upgraded marquee will reduce the amount of energy needed to prevent the ice melting while pipes will be replaced with more efficient equivalents, under-floor insulation will be doubled in thickness and new fully recyclable barriers will be installed around the rink.

The operator will also advertise flagship events happening in Worthing and will promote local businesses and services. The Council is also exploring the idea of illuminating trees in the corners of Steyne Gardens to make the area safer and more welcoming.

In addition, the operator has promised to again offer thousands of reduced-price tickets to community groups and local schools.

The attraction - known as Worthing Ice Rink - has been in Steyne Gardens every winter since 2014. When the contract expired this year, the Council was required to advertise the availability of the site so that potential operators could put forward proposals for the land.

Cllr Rita Garner, Worthing's Cabinet Member for Culture & Leisure, said:

“The ice rink has been a hugely popular attraction for children and families in particular so I'm delighted it will be returning - especially now that it will be even more environmentally friendly.

“It not only brings people into the town centre, many of whom help local traders by staying to shop or have a meal, but also contributes funding to help pay for vital Council services.”

Suzi Bradley said:

“We're delighted to be returning to Steyne Gardens with Worthing Ice Rink. It was lovely to welcome everyone back last year after such a difficult period and we are really looking forward to skating with everyone again.”
