Funding boost delivers new play park in Sompting

Released: Monday, 04 April 2022

Work will soon get underway to create a brand-new play park in Sompting Recreation Ground, thanks to a funding partnership.

Adur District Council and Sompting Big Local Partnership have each contributed £50,000 for a new play park to be installed after it was identified as in need of modernisation following a consultation with the local community about the green space.

Several providers were invited to submit proposals to revamp the children's playground, with the community having the final say over the design and choice of equipment.

The new playground will boast a range of accessible facilities for different age groups - including swings, slides, a climbing frame and a pendulum swing. Work is due to start on Monday 25th April 2022.

The new play park is part of an ongoing programme of work to enhance Sompting Recreation Ground and make it an area for all residents to enjoy, with Sompting Big Local having committed £125,000 over the next three years towards its development.

This has included working in partnership with the Council to plant a selection of Oak, Cherry, Hornbeam and Beech trees to provide much-needed shade in the open space during the hot summer months, some picnic tables have been added, and a community notice board has been installed.

There are also plans to improve the entrance on the west side of the park and modernise the toilet block.

Sompting Big Local - a project funded by the National Lottery and run by residents to improve and enhance the local area - is also working with the Council to set up a Friends of Sompting Recreation Ground group to help maintain and develop the community green space.

Emma Crowter, Co-ordinator of Sompting Big Local said:

“The new play park will be a great addition to the recreation ground, which is situated opposite the school and is a popular space for children to play. We hope it will encourage more families to visit and enjoy the park and experience the mental and physical health benefits of being outdoors.”

A spokesperson for Adur District Council said:

“We are delighted to have provided match funding to enhance this popular green space and to have worked in partnership with Sompting Big Local and local residents to develop the plans for the new play park, which we look forward to seeing installed and being enjoyed by Sompting residents.”
