Fishersgate Meet-In Place refurbished for Adur community

Released: Monday, 17 January 2022

A community centre in Fishersgate has been refurbished so the community can use the building for support, help and advice.

The Meet-In Place in Laylands Road was in poor condition and in need of work to make it a functional building.

Staff from Building Services at Adur & Worthing Councils have modernised the building and given it a fresh new look.

Work included removal of asbestos, installing a new kitchen, replacing damaged flooring and replastering some walls.

The windows have also been fixed, all rooms decorated, and an intruder alarm, smoke detectors and a new fire door has been installed.

Councillor Carson Albury, Adur's cabinet member for customer services, which includes housing, said:

“The idea for the building is that the local residents can go there for a chat, or if they need help to complete forms.

“They will also have access to the internet if they need to fill in online documents.

“We hope to hold a surgery once a month so that residents can come and talk to us about work they have booked in.”

Adur Tenants' Forum (ATF) is also planning to start running meetings again, following their suspension because of COVID-19, and is looking for people to join the committee.

Adur Homes tenants are automatically members of Adur Tenants' Forum, which is a district-wide umbrella group consisting of representatives from Residents' Associations and Community Champions who meet to discuss issues relating to council housing, council planning and repairs.

The forum will be holding its AGM over Zoom on Tuesday 18th January 2022, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, for people to find out more and everyone is welcome - for details see the Adur Tenants' Forum website.

Jill Lennon, chair of the Adur Tenants' Forum, said:

"It's brilliant that the Meet-In Place has been refurbished so that we can get the forum up and running again.

"It is extremely important that Adur Homes tenants have a voice so we can play an active role in the decisions being made for the community's future.

"We would love to see people at our AGM so please get in touch with me at the email below, or visit the website to access the zoom link to the meeting."
