Local residents are set to get active in parks across Adur and Worthing

A series of taster activity classes taking place in parks across Adur and Worthing are proving so popular that spaces are fast running out.
With funding and support from Adur & Worthing Councils and West Sussex Public Health, the Active Parks initiative is being delivered by local group Activ8. It is designed to encourage local residents to increase their activity levels as we move out of lockdown.
The COVID pandemic has seen many people unable to exercise, with lockdown restrictions placing limits on the amount of time people have been able to spend outdoors and leisure centres closed. Active Parks is the first in a series of activity programmes being rolled out by the Councils in 2021 with the aim of improving the health and fitness of Adur and Worthing's communities.
The courses - which run for eight weeks - are intended to give participants a taster for exercise to encourage and support them to increase their activity levels in line with public health guidelines. This is 150 minutes a week - or 30 minutes a day, five days a week - of moderate intensity physical activity.
Participants can choose from a range of classes, including beginners' running, walking, dance, yoga and zumba. Class sizes are limited to a maximum of five participants, will take place outdoors and in line with social distancing guidelines to ensure participants' stay safe.
The classes form part of the Get Active initiative, which means that the £10 fee is refundable if at least six out of the eight classes are completed.
A spokesperson for Adur & Worthing Councils said:
“Being active has huge physical and mental health benefits and it helps to keep our immune system strong.
“This last year has been challenging for everyone with many people stuck at home and unable to access leisure facilities or even meet for a walk with friends. The Active Parks initiative offers a great way for local residents to ease their way back into exercise and start to focus on their fitness once again.”
