A popular former Chairman of Adur District Council who will “forever be remembered for his big smile and his warm words” has sadly died.

Cllr George Barton, who has represented Peverel ward in Sompting since 2016, passed away this week.

The former lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army became a popular figure locally, raising thousands of pounds for charity and attending more than 100 community events when serving as the district's first citizen last year.

Colleagues paid tribute to the contribution he had made to the area, particularly in championing young people and the armed services.

Cllr Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council, said:

“It is with great sadness that I learned of George's passing. He was a wonderful kind man who will forever be remembered for his big smile and his warm words.

“George was at heart a real family man who after a successful career in business and serving 20 years in the TA, turned his hand to politics.

“Despite only becoming a councillor locally five years ago, he was a well-known community champion, giving young people - especially those who acted as carers - a voice while ensuring those who served our country are given the support and advice they deserve.

“My sincerest condolences go out to his family at this time and I hope there comes a time soon when we are able to celebrate the life of this very remarkable person.”

George was born in Gillingham, Kent and worked in training and development for one of the old Industrial Training Boards.

He was recruited from this to become Sales and Marketing Director of a national stationery company before moving into consultancy, which included attending many seminars throughout Europe as a motivational speaker.

George entered local politics on retirement becoming Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group of York City Unitary Authority.

He moved to the south coast in 2014 with his wife Vee to be closer to their family.

George was elected to the Council in 2016 and became Chairman in 2019. During his 12 months in office, he raised about £2,500 for his chosen charity Electric Storm Youth in Lancing which helps young people in Lancing and Sompting, improving their quality of life.

He also sat on West Sussex County Council.

A private family funeral will take place in the coming weeks with a celebration of life event planned for later this year.

As a mark of respect, the flag at the Shoreham Centre will be flown at half mast on the day of his funeral and a minute's silence will be held at the Adur Full Council meeting on 18th February 2021.
