Improvement works to Queensway in Lancing to get underway this Autumn

Released: Monday, 14 September 2020

The much-awaited works to improve the quality of the road surface in Queensway in Lancing will get underway later this month.

The works, which will start on Monday 21 September, are being carried out in response to concerns raised by residents and businesses about the quality of the carriageway which had become damaged and unstable due to its regular use by lorries.

Following discussions with West Sussex County Council, which is responsible for maintaining the roads, Adur District Council made the decision to undertake the work, which will take up to five weeks to complete.

Cllr Brian Boggis, Executive Member for Regeneration for Adur District Council, said:

“We’ve listened to what local residents and businesses have said about the need for the improvement works. We didn’t feel that the solution suggested by West Sussex County Council to tarmac the road was the right approach for Queensway. We therefore decided to undertake the work ourselves to maintain the look and feel of the area.”

The existing roadway will be replaced with new interlocking roadblocks, which will be suitable for the level of vehicle use in Queensway. The roadblocks will be in three shades of grey to form a mosaic effect.

There will be some temporary changes for local residents and businesses while the work is carried out. This includes:

  • the closure of Littlecroft car park - regular users are advised to make alternative parking arrangements during this time. Alternative car parking is available at North Farm Road.
  • deliveries to local businesses will be redirected to the North Road entrance to Queensway
  • the collection point for waste will also be temporarily moved to the entrance on North Road. Arrangements are being made with the contractors to assist local residents and businesses by moving the bins from the rear car park to the road on collection day.

Pedestrian access is unlikely to be affected during the planned works.

The Queensway improvement works form part of “And Then ...”, the Councils' short, sharp programme of interventions and assistance to help the communities of Adur and Worthing bounce back from the impact of lockdown.
