Tributes paid to former Mayoress of Worthing

Released: Tuesday, 07 April 2020

Former Mayoress of Worthing, Cllr Norah Fisher, who was well known for attending civic functions with her beloved labradoodle Herbie, has died.

Tributes have been paid to the service Cllr Fisher gave the borough both as a councillor and for her work with charities for the less able-bodied. She served as Mayoress to Cllr Bob Smytherman in 2013-14 and as a councillor for Tarring ward between 2008 to 2016.

Today Cllr Smytherman said:

“I hope the borough will come together in the months ahead in joy rather than sorrow to remember the amazing life and service Norah gave to Worthing.”

Current Mayor of Worthing, Cllr Hazel Thorpe, said:

“Norah and Herbie will be missed but remembered also for their devotion to duty, fortitude and inspiration to others. Norah was never the one to give up when the going was tough. She was an outstanding councillor and friend”.

When she became Cllr Smytherman's Mayoress, Norah insisted that Herbie become Mayor's Cadet and he accompanied her on every civic visit. She used an electric mobility impaired vehicle due to suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for more than 30 years.

Cllr Fisher was involved with several committees working with disabled issues in various sectors of the community.

She was Secretary of Worthing Access and Mobility Group, which brought about many changes in Worthing to improve public access to buildings.

Norah was also an avid supporter of Brighton & Hove Albion and she was Vice Chair of their Disabled Supporters Group, and assisted with the running of away trips on specially-adapted buses, and work to improve facilities at the Club's ground.

She was also a Governor of Thomas A Becket Middle and First Schools. She was made an Honorary Alderwoman of the borough in 2019.

MP for Worthing West, Sir Peter Bottomley said:

“As we miss her, let us try to continue doing more in the many fields that mattered to her, with her courage, her grace and her energy and constancy.”
