Adur Winter Sock Appeal launched to support rough sleepers
Released: Friday, 10 January 2020
An appeal to ensure unwanted socks are donated to rough sleepers this winter is underway thanks to Adur District Council.
With temperatures set to plummet in the coming weeks, kind-hearted residents and businesses are being encouraged to donate to the Adur Winter Sock Appeal.
Two collection points for new, unwanted items have been established in the Shoreham Centre and Worthing Town Hall with the aim of keeping those in need warm this winter.
The idea came from Adur councillor Paul Mansfield, who slept rough for a week in March last year to highlight the plight faced by those facing the evenings on the street.
Cllr Mansfield said:
“That week really opened my eyes to what those who do not have a home have to go through. It made me want to do something to support those in need, particularly when it gets cold.”
“After talking to a range of groups who work with the homeless, the importance of keeping your feet warm just kept being mentioned. That's why I landed on the idea of socks. I hope as many people as possible will support the cause and help those in need this winter.”
The appeal was announced by Cllr Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur District Council, at a meeting last month. He said:
“If there's one thing that we all get a lot of at Christmas it's socks. What better way to put these to good use than by supporting those in most need. I hope as many people as possible support this campaign, particularly with the temperatures set to drop.”
Anyone who wishes to donate good-quality pairs of socks which are preferably thick or thermal lined, can drop them off at Shoreham Centre or Worthing Town Hall from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
Any donations will be passed on to groups such as Salvation Army and Worthing Soup Kitchen, who support rough sleepers in the area.
