Review of Adur Council Tax discount

Released: Friday, 12 July 2019

Members of the public are being invited to support a widespread review of Council Tax discounts across Adur.

In an effort to make sure everyone is receiving the correct financial support, Adur District Council will shortly be contacting everyone who receives the single person discount across the area.

Those who live in a household with only one adult receive 25% off their Council Tax. Other groups including students, apprentices and carers may also be eligible for a reduction.

As part of a regular review, letters will be sent to those receiving the discount asking them to confirm their current circumstances with the aim of reducing incorrect claims.

A previous exercise in Worthing reclaimed more than £465,000 which has been used to lower Council Tax bills and support local services.

Councillor Angus Dunn, Adur District Council's Executive Member for Resources, said:

“We are committed to keeping Council Tax as low as possible whilst ensuring that residents receive the discounts they are entitled to.”

“However, anyone who is falsely claiming a Council Tax discount is not paying their fair share towards local services. It's imperative therefore that we carry out this review on a regular basis.”

Taxpayers currently receiving the discount in the Adur area will be contacted over the next few months.

If you receive a letter regarding your Single Person Discount, please complete the form and return it as soon as possible, or alternatively complete the online form on the Adur & Worthing Councils' website.

Anyone giving incorrect information or failing to notify of a change in their circumstances within 21 days of a change could be hit with a £70 fine which would affect their discount.
