Trust status for Worthing Theatres a step closer

Released: Wednesday, 03 July 2019

The next stage of Worthing Theatres' move to an independent trust is set to get the green light.

Worthing Borough Council's in house theatre team is to be backed to take over the running of the enterprise, which includes the museum, after a report recommended it was best placed to deliver a dynamic future.

Now, subject to a final contract price, leaders of the Council have been recommended to confirm that the team will take over. While the Council retains ownership of the buildings, the in house team, established as an independent charitable trust, will be responsible for day-to-day operations, budget, staff and event programming.

It will be entirely responsible for running Theatres as a viable economic operation.

A report before Worthing Borough Council's executive members recommends the authority contribute £100,000 to help the new trust's start up costs and delegates the contract negotiations to the Director for Economy.

Worthing Borough Council's Executive Member for Customer Services, Cllr Heather Mercer, said:

“I'm pleased this report recommends we give the excellent in house team a chance to make a real go of running the theatres and museum for themselves. They have already shown in the work they have done to turn around the financial performance of Theatres that they are more than capable of making a success of the business.”

“By establishing a charitable trust free of the day-to-day involvement of the Council they can attract much more public funding than we can and of course they will have to work hard to continue to provide the entertainment to the public for which they are now justly recognised and make sure they live within their financial limits.”

Worthing Borough Council's cultural offer includes Worthing Theatres, which oversees the management of the Pavilion Theatre, Assembly Hall and Connaught Theatre; and Worthing Museum and Art Gallery.
