New sports centre could be built in Worthing
Released: Wednesday, 06 March 2019
A brand new state-of-the-art sports facility could be built to replace Worthing Leisure Centre, a report reveals.
The new centre would be built on the same Shaftesbury Avenue site in West Worthing as the current structure which the report says is nearing the end of its life and is increasingly expensive to maintain.
The report, to go before a meeting Worthing Borough Council’s Executive Members on Tuesday (Mar 5) recommends funding a development masterplan to bring together a range of options for the site which might include housing to help fund the leisure centre. The centre would host swimming pools, sports hall, community facilities, creche and a cafe.
The new centre would be built in another part of the grounds so that the existing centre can remain open in the interim ensuring sports facilities are available during development. If a suitable plan can be developed it is hoped building on the new centre could begin at the end of next year with an opening in the second half of 2021.
The news comes as both Adur District Council and Worthing Borough Council takes steps to develop a Sports and Activity strategy to help improve the health and wellbeing of their communities and co-ordinate the need for facilities to match and aspirations of the strategy. Evidence of the sorts of activities that will be increasingly popular and where gaps are in provision would be part of this.
The report recommends both the development of the strategy and the go-ahead to come forward with a range of options for development of the leisure centre site which might then be put out for public consultation.
Worthing Borough Council’s Executive Member for Digital and Environmental Services, Cllr Edward Crouch said:
"It’s important that firstly we have a joined up strategy to help our communities stay active and healthy and partake in as many sports as possible but of course it is also important that we have the modern facilities and infrastructure to allow them to do this.
"I welcome this report as the start of an holistic look at our sports and leisure provision."
Worthing Leisure Centre is one of the sports and leisure facilities owned by the borough council but which are operated by South Downs Leisure, a charitable trust.
