Bills for borough council services in Worthing to rise by 2.8 per cent
Released: Wednesday, 27 February 2019
Council tax bills for borough council services in Worthing will rise by 2.8 per cent, it was decided last night (Tuesday, 26th February 2019).
The rise, an increase of £5.76 a year or 11p a week, was voted through at a meeting of Worthing Borough Council. This makes Worthing's share of the total bill for an average household (Band C) of £211.36 per annum.
In line with all other district and borough councils in the UK, Worthing had been given permission by the government to raise the bill by three per cent but decided to come in under that figure.
A report to the Council said that the borough had seen the government grants fall by approximately 12 per cent for the next financial year. Further pressure were created by a substantial increase in housing need numbers, and gaps left by big cuts in the budget of West Sussex County Council. To balance the budget the borough had also had to make £1.4m cuts of its own.
Worthing Borough Council leader, Cllr Dan Humphreys told the meeting last night the increase would help develop key economic sites in the town, develop digital and creative economies, build homes and protect the environment. He said:
“The budget you are considering tonight furthers these ambitions, while taking prudent and responsible step that protect the services our community value and enable them to thrive.”
The total budget for services for next year will be a little over £13m.
In addition to the borough council increase, the office of the county's Police and Crime Commissioner has increased bills by 14.2 per cent (£21.33 a year per average household) while West Sussex County Council had increased its bill by 4.99 per cent adding £58.48 a year to a Band C household taking its annual total to £1,229.84 a year.
All increases come into effect from 1st April 2019.
