£4.2m new refuse fleet hits the streets of Adur and Worthing

They're here! A new multi-million pound fleet of bin lorries has rumbled into Adur and Worthing and is already getting down to work.
The £4.2 million investment not only provides residents and businesses with a state-of-the-art refuse fleet but also reinforces Adur & Worthing Councils' commitment to maintain weekly household bin collections at a time when some local authorities are switching to fortnightly and even monthly ones.
The 26-tonne new trucks will deliver environmental benefits as well as savings for council tax payers because the lorries use less fuel and will cost less to maintain than the old fleet, which is now 10 years old.
The first of 24 blue Dennis Eagle wagons arrived in April and the final one has now taken its place at the Councils' recycling, refuse and waste depot in Commerce Way, Lancing.
The Mayor of Worthing, Councillor Alex Harman, and the Chairman of Adur District Council, Councillor Peter Metcalfe, will attend a ceremony to mark the occasion on Thursday, 20th July 2017.
The old trucks, which have already outlived their seven-year expected lifespan, will be sold at auction, with the proceeds contributing to the cost of the new ones.
Councillor Emma Evans, Adur's Executive Member for Environment, said:
“It is great to see the new fleet in place. The team have worked very hard throughout the whole procurement process to ensure we have obtained the best value for our residents and this fleet delivers just that as well important environmental benefits.”
Councillor Diane Guest, Worthing's Executive Member for Environment, added:
“There are so many advantages in living in Worthing and Adur, and weekly domestic bin collections are definitely among the benefits as other councils cut back on this vital service to save money.”
“For many people, the most visible part of a council's services is having their bins emptied every week and we are showing with the introduction of our new fleet that we will continue to put residents at the heart of everything we do.”
All of the new bin lorries have six-speed automatic gearboxes, advanced electronic braking, 360 degree CCTV monitoring and recording, and rear radar reversing systems.
They were made by Dennis Eagle, a UK company which has been manufacturing refuse vehicles since 1907. The bodies and chassis were built in Warwick and the cabs in Blackpool.
While all 24 appear to be identical, they serve three different purposes:
- Thirteen 'twin pack' vehicles have separate compartments for general domestic waste (65% of the capacity load) and garden rubbish (35%)
- Eight will be used for collecting recycling materials
- Three are for commercial waste.
All of the trucks bear the Councils' new logo, introduced this year to mark the 10th anniversary of the amalgamation of some services and the administration of Adur District Council and Worthing Borough Council. The authorities continue to retain their individual identities and their own councillors.
Working together in this way has saved the Councils about £17 million over 10 years. The refuse service was the first to be merged as Adur & Worthing Councils Services (AWCS).
