Draft Worthing Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) consultation 2024
Air quality is fundamental to our health and wellbeing. There are a number of factors that contribute to the quality of the air we breathe, and we are committed to doing all that we can to make our area a cleaner, safer and healthier place to live, work and visit.
The draft Air Quality Action Plan for Worthing (dated July 2024) sets out a range of measures intended to improve air quality and we are keen to hear your views.

Background
Where we determine that health-based air quality objectives are not met, we have a statutory duty to declare Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) and draw up Air Quality Action Plans (AQAPs) to improve air quality in the AQMA.
An AQMA was declared in Worthing in 2010 - Worthing Grove Lodge - for non-compliance with legal limits of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), which is associated with health problems such as asthma and bronchitis. Following a further air quality assessment, the AQMA was expanded in 2014 to incorporate Offington Corner and Lyons Farm. This was followed by our first Air Quality Action Plan. More information is available here.
Air quality in Worthing is generally improving, however levels of NO2 are still above the national annual mean objective of 40µg/m3 within the AQMA at Grove Lodge.
We have a legal duty to regularly revise our action plan and have therefore carried out a further modelling exercise to understand how levels may change in the next few years. This has resulted in this new Action Plan, created in partnership with West Sussex County Council and National Highways. Measures are targeted towards the predominant sources of emissions within and around the AQMA.
Progress on measures set out within this plan will be reported within our Annual Status Reports and, if necessary, the AQAP will be updated in 2029.
