Professional Dog Walkers
Voluntary Code of Conduct

Introduction

A Professional Dog Walker (PDW) is a person who is paid to exercise other people's dogs. In return the PDW takes on the full responsibility for the health and actions of the dog for as long as it is in their care as if they were the owners.

There is no national legislation to provide model guidelines for a business that can affect our parks and spaces therefore we have designed a Voluntary Code of Conduct for Adur and Worthing. This is intended to encourage scheme members to behave in a consistent manner and reduce the likelihood of incidents or complaints. There is no cost to the PDW for this scheme.

Scheme members are partaking of the code voluntarily and have not been tested in any manner by the Dog Warden Service with the exception of checking for insurances and vehicle legality.

The Voluntary Code of Conduct

As a member of the above scheme, I agree that I and my staff shall at all times whilst working:

  • ensure our charges do not cause harm, nuisance or disturbance to members of the public including keeping them on a lead until safely clear of the unloading area
  • treat our charges humanely, causing no harm or suffering, either physical or mental
  • be aware of our charges actions and behaviour at all times
  • hold public liability insurance for a minimum of £5million
  • be aware of and comply with all laws, including bylaws, local laws, Public Space Protection Orders and any other regulations regarding our charges, noting that these laws will change according to the geographical area we are working in
  • have the contact details of our business attached to all dogs while in our care to assist a lost dog to be returned
  • only use vehicles that are suitable for safe animal transportation, such vehicles should:
    • be road legal with correct insurance, MOT and vehicle tax
    • have adequate space, security and ventilation
    • ensure animals are not able to interfere with the driver or able to leave the vehicle while it is moving
  • all PDWs should have a good knowledge of dog behaviour and body language and should be strong enough to control our charges
  • be qualified in Animal First Aid and carry an appropriate First Aid pack in any vehicle

and that it would be desirable to:

  • be recognisable to the public with either an identity card or clothing marked with the business name of the Professional Dog Walking Company

How to apply

To become a member of the scheme you will need to agree to the following:

  • that while working as a Professional Dog Walker you will follow the guidelines in the code of conduct
  • that you will keep your insurances up to date
  • that you will allow a brief examination of your vehicle to ensure it fits the minimum standards set out in the code
  • that you will display on your vehicle a numbered registration tag in such a way that it can be read easily

Please fill out the online application form below:

Once we have received your application one of the Councils' Dog Wardens will make an appointment to check your insurance and vehicle documents. We will also have a brief examination of the animal section of the vehicle itself. This can be done either at our depot or at a location chosen jointly.

You will then be issued with a numbered windscreen label for each vehicle and will become a member of the scheme.
