Council Tax Support reduced for all working age claimants in Worthing

Customers who are pensioners are not affected by this change.

From 1st April 2015 there was a change to the way we calculate how much help customers claiming Council Tax Support receive.

Following a public survey in 2014 where 79.7% of people responding confirmed that they strongly agreed that all Working age claimants should pay something, Worthing Borough Council agreed to a new policy where all Households claiming Council Tax Support where the claimant and/or partner is of working age should pay at least £5.00 each week. This was ratified at the Full Council Meeting held on 17th February 2015.

For some claimants this means they now have a bill where they had not previously been asked to pay anything whilst for others it means that their bill increases by £5.00 per week.

The monthly payments will vary according to what level of Council Tax Support claimants are entitled to and this will be detailed on the reverse of their bill.

We now have the option to offer 12 (rather than 10) monthly instalments and if customers would like us to reschedule their bill they should send us an email (with 'Payment method request' in the subject line) to Other payment schedules may be considered as long as payment in full is made by the end of March in any given year.

Under the provisions of the scheme adopted by Worthing Borough Council there is no right of appeal against the restriction (and the subsequent increase in Council Tax due to be paid).

If these changes affect you and will cause you significant financial hardship, there is a discretionary scheme that you can apply to for extra help to reduce your bill. You can download and print the application form from our discretionary Council Tax payment webpage. The completed form should be returned to:

  • Revenues & Benefits,
    PO Box 5000,
    Worthing Town Hall,
    Chapel Road,
    West Sussex
    BN11 1JN

We are likely to need additional evidence to support your claim for discretionary assistance and this will be requested once your application has been received because each case will be different.
