Helping Hand Scheme

Helping Hand is a scheme that allows bus passengers who may need extra help to ask - discreetly, directly and quickly - by showing a basic instruction card to the driver when boarding the bus. The scheme was launched in September 2014.

The free card is yellow and the size of a credit card. Some examples of messages that it can carry include:

  • Please wait until I am seated
  • Call out my requested stop
  • Lower the ramp and step
  • Pushchair can’t be folded
  • Requires priority seating

The card can be used to indicate to the driver an unlimited range of other needs – for example, that assistance might be needed because of epilepsy, Alzheimer's or dementia – and there is also space for emergency contact details.

The Helping Hand cards are designed to help improve customer experience for those who may benefit from additional assistance.

The ethos is "We want to help our drivers to help you."

Cards are administered by Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company and Metrobus. The scheme is also supported by other local bus operators, including The Big Lemon, Compass Travel, Stagecoach and thesussexbus.com.

To apply for a free Helping Hand card, you can ask for an application form to be posted to you by calling Brighton & Hove Buses' customer services team on 01273 886200, or you can complete the online Helping Hand application form below:
